I had trouble with it, and I will explain why. Indeed, the novella shows many of the characteristics commonly associated with romanticism in general and German romanticism in particular: This magical realism is something Dwr like a lot in his stories. I got this book in a smaller Russian bookstore in haste, so I could read while waiting in the gardens; Strange selection in the first place for the store, since it’s shelved under ‘language learning’.

Der Goldne Topf is, in fact a story about dreams and day jobs. Hoffmann saw things we could not have thought of and wrote them down in a way that compels us to believe them. Darauf richtet sich auch letztlich seine Aussage, die jungen Introvertierten oder hoffnungslosen Abenteuern vermittelt, dass ihr Weg kein falscher ist.

The transformation of Lindhorst’s bronze knocker into the face of the Applewoman is echoed in Charles Dickens ‘ A Christmas Carol when Ebenezer Scrooge sees Jacob Marley’s face in his own door knocker. The story is composed of events. The ending is unexpected and totally satisfying.
