Thus the search for a synthesis between the ideal and the real, between art and life has not been concluded at the end of Der goldne Topf.

I had trouble with it, and I will explain why. Indeed, the novella shows many of the characteristics commonly associated with romanticism in general and German romanticism in particular: This magical realism is something Dwr like a lot in his stories. I got this book in a smaller Russian bookstore in haste, so I could read while waiting in the gardens; Strange selection in the first place for the store, since it’s shelved under ‘language learning’.
Definitely not a work that would appeal to everyone, but I was thoroughly amused and taken with it.

Each main ropf has a fantastic and an ordinary identity: It took me a long time to get into this story which is actually quite sad, considering it’s so short but it was totally worth it!

Aug 15, Sebastian rated it it was ok Shelves: And therefore, while in and of itself, the mythical and romantic poetic realm of Atlantis, while the ideals of poetry, fantasy and imagination might not in fact ever be completely open to and for individuals like Heerbrand, Paulmann and Veronika, they are also and nevertheless presented in Der goldne Topf as never inherently negative, problematic or loathsome, but as pleasant, even-tempered, although perhaps and a trifle annoyingly unimaginative, rather mildly tedious personages.
Der Goldne Topf is, in fact a story about dreams and day jobs. Hoffmann saw things we could not have thought of and wrote them down in a way that compels us to believe them. Darauf richtet sich auch letztlich seine Aussage, die jungen Introvertierten oder hoffnungslosen Abenteuern vermittelt, dass ihr Weg kein falscher ist.

goldn It’s interesting in terms of fictional world theory and metalepsis. The transformation of Lindhorst’s bronze knocker into the face of the Applewoman is echoed in Charles Dickens ‘ A Christmas Carol when Ebenezer Scrooge sees Jacob Marley’s face in his own door knocker. The story is composed of events. The ending is unexpected and totally satisfying.
