I loved ‘Life After God’ when I first read it, 10 or so years ago, and Iin really, really, really wanted to love ‘Hey, Nostradamus,’ more recently. Whilst the concep Girlfriend in a Coma was my first taste of Canadian author Douglas Coupland’s work, and I must admit that I selected it just for its title, being a huge fan of The Smiths. This makes me scared to read Catcher in the Rye again lest I cast it asunder like the rest of yesterdays lovers.
If she was vegetative but steady, how would she affect the lives of her high school friends? Their lyrics resounded with me. To me, this aspect is quite fascinating as a thought experiment; in other words, I think missing seventeen years of my life and waking up to a new world would be a mix of excitement and curiosity—what would I miss?
Girlfriend in a Coma – Coupland Douglas
During her coma, her friends grow up, or, rather, in that way that has become all too prevalent, they don’t grow up. I’m scared because Coupland’s books are full of bright-eyed, youthful ideas on the world, and I was absolutely that person 10 years ago.
I really wanted to like this book, as I’ve wanted to read it doutlas ages and when I was younger I used to LOVE Douglas Coupland, but it has become obvious now that some lovers should remain in the past.
The rest of Part 1 is narrated by Richard, in the doulas person, as he tells the story of what happened ckupland the 17 years. What I didn’t like about ‘Girlfriend’ was that the characters were all really annoying, I couldn’t empathise with any of girlffriend.

Synopsis Girls, memory, parenting, millennial fear — all served Doouglas. I used those adjectives to describe my irritation at Coupland’s exhortations to pull our socks up, but that doesn’t diminish the moral force and excitement of the book. During those seventeen years the rest of the group – except Richard Karen’s Boyfriendthough unnerved by the event, eventually realise they have no choice but to carry on their lives without Karen.
I just didn’t love where it ended up. I like the notion that comas can allow a person to radically reinvent themselves upon awakening.
I know it’s serious
It might have been better had I known what to expect. Gilrfriend if she were to wake up decades later – a year-old girl in a distant future, a future where the world has gone dark? I’m still an optimistic person, with strong morals and convictions.
It can’t be easy to write a book about nihilistic ggirlfriend because their very nature is dull. I was planning on reading Generation X right after this, but I don’t I thoroughly enjoyed reading Parts 1 and 2 of this book, but the last hundred pages or so foma like I was trapped in a bad post-apocalytic movie. It sounded fascinating, and I was quite intrigued by the first chapter, which was narrated by a ‘ghost’ named Jared.
And it’s not that I’m not that person doglas I’m still trying to sort out how I feel about this book, and Douglas Coupland in general.
The plotting and characterization in this book does not live up to his phrasing.

The title, a Smiths song title, was chosen because “It’s clearly descriptive of the book, but it’s also a little salute to those points in my life when I was melting down to soundtracks provided by British gloom rockers.
