We would have few pleasures if we never flattered ourselves. The maxims indicate a man fully aware of the political intrigue surrounding Paris, and the conflict that posed with attempting to live a moral life.

I value the book as a whole and I wouldn’t prefer one part over the other because I can’t help but think I overlooked some things. Indeed it will be difficult to persuade rochefoucauuld man of good sense that they are being condemned for any other reasons than hidden self-interest, pride, and self-love.
